Complete Guide to Dermal Filler Pre and Post-Care

Dermal filler procedures can be a great way to achieve a more youthful and refreshed appearance. However, proper pre and post-care are essential to ensure the best possible results. Here are some thorough instructions for dermal filler pre and post-care.

Pre-Care Instructions:

  1. Avoid certain medications and supplements that may increase your risk of bruising, such as Aspirin, NSAIDs, Ginkgo Biloba, Garlic Supplements, Green Tea, Flax Oil, Cod Liver Oil, Vitamins A and E, and essential fatty acids, for up to 1 week before and after injections.

  2. Refrain from drinking alcoholic beverages 24 hours before (or after) your treatment to avoid extra bruising.

  3. Take Arnica tablets 2-3 days before your injection to reduce the risk of bruising.

  4. Avoid using products that may irritate your skin, such as Tretinoin/Retin-A, glycolic acid, benzoyl peroxide, or hydroquinone for 2-3 days before and after treatment.

  5. If you have a history of cold sores, inform your provider to receive advice on antiviral therapy prior to treatment.

  6. Do not use any of the above if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or are allergic to any of their ingredients. Please inform your provider if you have any questions about this prior to treatment.

Day of Treatment:

  1. You may use topical anesthetic medication in-office before your scheduled appointment (please arrive 30 minutes prior to the procedure).

  2. Arrive with a clean face. Please do not wear makeup.

  3. You may experience a mild amount of tenderness or stinging during and following injection.

  4. Redness and swelling are normal. Some bruising may also be visible.

Post-Care Instructions:

  1. Apply ice (but avoid firm pressure) for 15 minutes, three times a day, to the treated area.

  2. Take Acetaminophen/Tylenol if you experience any mild tenderness or discomfort.

  3. Do not massage treated areas after treatment unless the provider recommends it.

  4. After treatment, there will be moderate swelling/redness with the possibility of bruising. These symptoms will resolve in about seven days. You may apply or take Arnica tablets to help decrease the amount of bruising.

  5. Avoid extended UV exposure until any redness/swelling has subsided. Apply SPF.

  6. Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours to reduce bruising. You may resume other normal activities/routine immediately.

  7. Avoid laser, IPL, or skin tightening treatments of the area for at least 2-3 weeks.

  8. You may continue using your topical products, as mentioned above, after one week of injection.

By following these pre and post-care instructions, you can ensure the best possible results from your dermal filler treatment. If you have any questions or concerns about these instructions or your treatment, please do not hesitate to contact us.
